Sure I was upset when Pat Bowlen decided to fire Mike Shanahan as the head coach. I loved Shanahan. I thought he was a gutzy guy. I grew up with him, and loved his style. But despite that, I decided that maybe this new head coach, Josh McDaniels, might be a good thing for the Broncos. Maybe a change in gears would get the team going. You know, switch things up a little. I resolved to give him a chance.
Well, that chance has now come and gone. I can now officially say I do not like him. What has he done? He tried to trade Jay Cutler in a 3-way trade with New England and Tampa Bay, with the hope of being re-united with Matt Cassel, the quarterback of New England. Aka, the guy he's been coaching for the past couple years. Josh, when you took this job, you took the Broncos. That doesn't mean you go and trade our players so that you can bring in your favorites from your former team. NO. You left New England, which means you left Matt Cassel.
I understand that Tampa Bay initiated the trade talk, but I'm sure that McDaniels was doing everything in his power to promote the trade to the other Bronco personnel. Now that the trade is not happening, he is backpedaling for dear life.

Well since Matt Cassel has now been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, Cutler doesn't have the threat of being traded. No, he's just been BETRAYED! Stabbed in the back! Double crossed! The whole point of getting Josh McDaniels was to help Cutler progress and become even more amazing! Now, McDaniels has gone and ruined that relationship right from the get-go. Good one, buddy!
This was Cutler's response:
"What bothers me about this is I've been dropping in there regularly the last 2 1/2 weeks, dealing with these guys, talking to Mr. Bowlen, talking to Josh, talking to (offensive coordinator)Mike McCoy," Cutler said. "Day to day . . . and they didn't reach this point yesterday, you know what I mean? It's been in motion for a while."
(Obviously he was blind-sided with the news of him potentially being traded.)
"Anything can be mended," he said. "I'll always play with the guys we've got. I love playing for those guys. Obviously, Josh and I's relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don't play for the coaches anyway; I play for teammates. As long as we keep the guys we've got, I'll go out there and play. I love those guys."
And that is why I love Jay Cutler. Naturally, I want Cutler to stay, but can understand if he now wants to leave. I will be his fan where ever he goes. Well...maybe not the Raiders.

You know that I love Jay Cutler just as much as you do (well, we're not up to man-crush level yet, he has to win a super bowl first) but here's the deal- he hasn't won yet. TONS of potential, and he's almost there, but he's still a little too inconsistent for my tastes. Too many interceptions in the red zone last year, way too many.
Also - remember John Elway and Dan Reeves? They hated each other. Hated. They still went to two or three super bowls together, though, if I remember correctly....so you don't have to have everything hunky-dory in order to win. But you do have to not throw the ball to the other team, especially when you're about to score.
I was going to bring up the Elway-Reeves relationship. They did hate each other. And yes, they went to a few Super Bowls together...but Elway didn't win a Super Bowl until Shanahan was the coach! You can't deny the mental aspect of the game.
There goes the next few seasons.
I don't think the Broncos lost those Super Bowls because of Dan Reeves and John Elway not being best buds. I think they lost them because Phil Simms played the perfect game, Doug Williams got crazy hot out of nowhere, and they played the 49ers in their prime....and they never had a good running game until Terrell Davis, unless you really think Sammy Winder or Bobby Humphrey were that good. I don't think it was the coach-quarterback relationship.
Anyway, Cutler isn't a winner yet. Tons of potential, and I'm as hopeful as anyone that he'll start realizing that potential soon, but he needs to get over it and he needs to get over it now. Stop ignoring the coach and do your part to fix the relationship.
Deet, I love you. I could only get like halfway through this post, b/c I don't understand sports at all. When the boys read this, they're going to fall in love with you and your amazing football knowledge. Ha!
I love your blog, I'm going to be an avid follower! : ) : )
