I Go Back

Today I had a flashback to high school cross country. It was great. Everything was the same....
The smell of muggy water. The sound of humming insects with the occasional grasshopper hitting your leg. The beating sun with sweat trickling down your face. The sound of your feet on the hard packed dirt path. The salt encrusted on your face. A cold wet stomach. Your legs suffering from the lactic acid build up and your lungs feeling the effects of respiratory acidosis. An occasional whistle from a passer-by. Pondering shaving your head. Trying to keep good form. One side of your brain saying “stop! You're crazy!" while the other masochistic side is saying “give me more! I want to hurt more!”. The feel of cotton mouth and feeling that a dry heave is coming on. Then the taste of cold water on your mouth.
Can anyone relate?
Best feeling in the world

Everything was the same. Except maybe the pace was a tad bit slower.

Only 2-3 minutes slower.

Per mile.

I’ll get there…someday. Someday I’ll be at that 7 min mark. Someday.

While I can't begin to relate, Joe loves your post! He ran cross country, too. He was out rollerblading today and discovered he's a few minutes longer, too. "Someday," he says, "someday." Here's to someday!

I can relate. And I too miss it. The only thing that keeps me from reliving this is me, and my lazy... you name it. If only the masochistic side would motivate me more- I should have never tuned out that little voice in my head.

I was born without that masochistic side - my own little birth defect. You ARE crazy.
